MAY/JUN 2017 MUSINGS by Maz Gardening Volunteer at Tatton Park Walled Kitchen Garden, Knutsford, Cheshire. Bright and cheery dandelions and graceful cow parsley line the lanes and lift the spirit, as does the glorious sunshine. Everywhere is very dry with grass browning. The Team spent much of the day mulching L-border in Charlotte’s Garden and sprucing up the shrubberies. Potato planting continues, and sowing rows of peas in trenches, with holly sprigs laid on top of the peas before mounding the soil over the rows – hopefully the field mice will have pricked noses should they try to pinch the peas. On Monday, June 19, at 2pm, Reverend Dom Clarke will host a service at St Matthew’s Church, Blackmoor, to mark the interment of Mr Dodson’s remains. Apple blossom in the air Wonderful to see our new apple trees flowering their socks off despite this last fiercely cold week with winds that made us all think it was January rather than the start of spring. Our volunteers have made an excellent job of planting all our new trees completing half of our new orchard – all beautifully set out and looking very neat and tidy – we will be labelling up individual trees with your names on them and tree friends are very welcome to come and visit the garden to see their trees in place. MAR/APR 2017 MUSINGS by Maz Gardening Volunteer at Tatton Park Walled Kitchen Garden, Knutsford, Cheshire Hazel, Alder and Willow catkins greet the traveller towards Tatton Park; ‘bread-and-cheese’ or Hawthorn is greening up the hedgerows, primroses and daffodils line the lane and ‘bridal veil’ (Spiraea) and winter Cherry is in the pink. Magnolias in the Gardens are magnificent, and the early Rhododendrons are blooming. Clearing up continues after Storm Doris’s rampage. Some trees it was thought would come down as they host bracket fungus didn’t, but seemingly healthy trees have.
